Obama Looks to Gay Georgians for Support

Since the former President Bill Clinton ran for office in 1992, Georgia’s electoral votes haven’t supported Democratic nominee. According to recent polls, this year could be different.

George W. Bush easily claimed Georgia’s 13 electoral votes in the past two elections, and Republicans have also triumphed with wins in most statewide races in Georgia since Governor Sonny Perdue defeated Roy Barnes back in 2002, endorsing Georgia as a primarily Republican state.

Political analyst are pointing to the historic Democratic candidacy of Barack Obama, along with a strong Libertarian contender from Georgia, Bob Barr, and the not so illustrious campaign of Republican John McCain as the catalyst for change.

To assist in securing the modification, Obama is looking for a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow by means of gay Georgia voters and he is pursuing the GLBT vote as no other presidential candidate has.

Caroline Adelman, Obama’s campaign communications director said “You don’t want to take anyone for granted. You want to let everyone know that their vote counts, that you care about their issues and that you’re listening.” Adelman also stated Obama plans on hiring a gay outreach coordinator in Georgia.

Longtime Gay Activist, Don George, who also worked on the 2002 Clinton campaign said “This is something we’ve never seen in Georgia before.”
