Gay Media Queen Sends Someone to His Defense
August 26, 2008 by James Hipps
UPDATE: In response to my editorial at the end of this excerpt, I received the following ANONYMOUS response. Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed! Here is the comment from the post:
Shame on you, James! The GLBT community has always been proud as a community of individuals who refuse to conform to the status quo.
Are you an idiot? What does political affiliation have to do with sexuality? Do all straight people vote the same? Get over yourself!
Boycotting?? Who do you think you are, The Southern Baptists? Boycotting hasn’t worked worked for them and it certainly won’t work for you.
What a bitter queen!!
Now, of course since I am not ANONYMOUS in my communications, I decided to respond. I would like to add one other thought however. It’s OK to be an individual and to have your own thoughts, but this is a time of change, and now, more than ever, we need to build a cohesive community. We need to stand together in pursuit of our rights. We can NOT let our personal beliefs get in the way of progress. This election is not about any one person and what they believe. This election is about what is best for us as a GLBT community. This is time to put your personal selfishness aside and work, or even fight for what is best for us as a whole. Again, this is NOT a time to think only of yourself.
Below is my response:
Me get over myself???? Now isn’t that priceless. Those in glass houses?
Well you certainly do have your opinion as well, and from the looks of it, I’m not the bitter queen!
Just because your wealth allows your to be eccentric doesn’t give you the right to force your opinions upon others. So, I’m the idiot. Your dialog demonstrates who the idiot may be, not too mention how you are not able to accept the very claim that you make in your statement above “proud as a community of individuals who refuse to conform to the status quo”, and yet, I’m the idiot? I was simply stating my opinion. I am not the one who has resorted to name calling just because I don’t agree with yours.
As far as the boycott, i simply suggest we shouldn’t support those in our community who in turn do not support us… especially those who have made great personal gains from the GLBT community. Now, who is it that needs to get over themselves?
Thank you for such a wonderful exchange of name calling and bitterness. I certainly know more now about the source, which would explain the reason.
Below is the original post:
In a recent article posted here, media mogul Colichman, owner of The Advocate, Out Magazine and GayWired.com had this to say:
“I’m a die-hard Democrat,” he tells Page Six. But Colichman was also a die-hard Hillary Clinton supporter. He and Harry Thomason produced a documentary, “The Hunting of the President: The 10-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton.”
Colichman, 46, who owns The Advocate and Out magazines, GayWired.com, and Here, the premium cable network for gays, said he finally dealt with his disappointment over Clinton’s defeat last week and came around to Obama.
“I thought, ‘Get over yourself!’ I had literally written out a check to the Obama campaign. And then I saw him in front of an evangelical group in Anaheim,” he said.
Before Rick Warren at the Saddleback Civil Forum, both Obama and McCain defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
“I thought, ‘Wow! He just threw the gay community under the bus,’ ” Colichman said. “My partner looked over at me, and we tore up the check.”
Can you believe this guy????
From my stand point, I was about to renew my subscription to “The Advocate”, but after reading this article, I tore the check up. Is Mr. Colichman so stupid (or just rich enough to not care) that he doesn’t realize the impact of Barack Obama loosing the election? Does he not realize (or again is he just to wealthy to care) that if McCain is elected, his very empire could be in jeopardy? Does he not realize the impact it would have had if Obama publicly supported gay marriage? Is this guy an idiot? The buzz has spread quickly however, and it looks as though a worldwide boycott of Mr. Colichman’s business has been started by a larger part of the GLBT community.
I guess it is true, money can’t buy everything, and case in point, it can’t buy intelligence! Yes, Please Mr. Colichman, get over yourself….a large part of the GLBT community has.

When I am President of the United States, gays and lesbians will have somebody who will fight for equal rights for them, somebody who opposes Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, somebody who’s fought to make sure that gays and lesbians aren’t discriminated against on the job or hospital visitation. Because they are our brothers and sisters, and I don’t mind anyone knowing where I stand.
