GA Talks to Florida International University

Last week, James Hipps of GayAgenda.com was asked back to his alma matter, Florida International University, located in Miami, Florida to lecture on GLBT issues.

Dr. Oscar Loynaz, the director University Health Services and professor of a upper level course on Gay and Lesbian studies in the U.S. invited James to speak to his class as an writer and activist for the GLBT community.

Among the topics discussed with the 55 students in attendance were health, suicide, discrimination, employment, religion, marriage, hate crimes, politics and equal rights, all from a GLBT perspective.

Hipps said, “There was a great deal of class participation.  I was really happy to see that a majority of students in the class identified as straight, but were open-minded and wanted to learn about GLBT issues.” He added, “Some of the topics that I spoke about, especially religion, was very eye-opening for the students and provoked a great deal of discussion.”

James told us that he was “especially proud” to be able to go back to his school and address such issues.  He has received several emails from students in attendance thanking him for his time and insight.  “This was a terrific opportunity for me to give back to the University, and to speak openly about issues that I am passionate about.  I feel very honored that Dr. Loynaz has asked me back to speak again next semester.  I know from the response I received both during and after my presentation, that I have helped to broaden the minds and educate students who genuinely care about human rights.”
