In the four years since same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts, the institution of marriage and the welfare of children in that commonwealth have clearly not been adversely affected because of it.
In 2006 (the most recent year for which statistics are available), the state Health Department found that of all babies born in New York, 99,981 - or more than 40 percent - were born out of wedlock. That same year, 59,924 New York marriages were dissolved.
If the Coalition to Save Marriage in New York and its religious and right-wing political supporters were truly concerned about marriage and the welfare of children in New York, they would focus their activities on addressing the well-known factors that undermine marriage and de-stabilize families.
