An Artist Statement from Charlie Love

October 22, 2008 by James Hipps

Please watch this fantastic video, which is an Artist Statement from Charlie Love.

Charlie is currently a student at Florida International University, in Miami, Florida. I had the pleasure of meeting her when I spoke on GLBT issues recently at the University.

According to Charlie, “My work is centered around my experience as a woman and my passion for social issues. I mostly work with mixed media and surfaces; materials that the audience can understand and relate to. I am taking my traditional skills and intermixing them with more bizarre and offbeat methods. I lean toward a more digital driven art. I take full advantage of the limitless potentiality that digital media offers. My pieces are most successful when they not only unravel my experiences , but awaken the viewer and generate a sense of discomfort.”

“Currently, I am constructing environments that are not common and marking the surroundings with a human quality. My intention is to explore the human form through manipulation but without losing the naturalness it possesses. I seek to achieve this through the transformation of gender, sexual identity, and cultural/ social expectations. I offer myself as a vehicle of awareness, raising a level of social conscious, while fulfilling my creative self-indulgences. I want my artwork to be evidence of the continuous efforts I make to communicate the human condition.”
