Overturn Prop 8 and Regain Right to Marry
November 12, 2008 by Gay Agenda News Team
Today is the first day of the campaign to overturn Proposition 8 by 2010 and to regain the freedom to marry.
We must do everything we can to ensure that in two years we have educated enough Californians about marriage equality that there will be no doubt we will win.
Thanks to you and your support and efforts since 2001 we have moved voters in California nearly 20 points! No other group seeking justice has ever made such an unbelievably huge change in the electorate. Now we must make the final and hardest effort to get that last few points to win back the right to marry.
Our pledge here at Equality California is to do everything in our power to channel all of the incredible energy, both in California and around the nation, into the campaign to take back our rights.
So here are OUR next steps:
EQCA, represented by NCLR, ACLU, Lambda Legal, Munger, Tolles, & Olson and the Law Office of David C. Codell, has filed a petition to invalidate Prop 8 – the fundamental rights of same-sex couples cannot be eliminated through the amendment process.
EQCA is supporting peaceful rallies and protests to ensure we keep this injustice front and center. Find out how you can join us at www.eqca.org/events
EQCA will work to gather the more than one million signatures needed to overturn Prop 8 in 2010.
Here’s how YOU can help:
Donate now– Every dollar will go to the fight to invalidate Prop 8 and the work has already started.
Be visible. Rally at your local City Hall at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, November 15. Events are happening across the country at exactly the same time, to show the nation we will not give up. Find out more information >>
Sign the pledge that you will work to help gather signatures to put a repeal of Prop 8 on the ballot in 2010.
I am so proud of the work we have accomplished together—EQCA members donated over $14 million to defeat Prop 8—$11 million more than any other organization.
We have much to be proud of and much to learn from the campaign. But to win, it will take all of us working together to cross the finish line. We need everyone’s help. Not just yours—everyone’s. Join the fight to win back marriage today!
In solidarity,
Geoff Kors
