American Apparel: “BUTT” We Support Gays!
January 18, 2009 by James Hipps
An American Apparel in West Vancouver is under fire over a magazine found in the store which has been deemed as pornographic. The store is re-butt-ing the complaint by claiming “free-expression” to argue it’s defense about selling BUTT magazine, a quarterly gay-lifestyle publication.
Earlier this week, a West Vancouver woman who was shopping at the store with her 13-year-old daughter saw a display that featured an accessible copy of BUTT, which as she put it, contained “a full, double-page spread of two men engaged fully in a sex act.” I guess she was intrigued enough to pick it up and look?
The woman then complained to the store manager and the operations manager of the mall.
In an email statement, Ryan Holiday, a spokes person for American Apparel said;
“The company supports its gay customers and anyone who enjoys the magazine. The accidental placement of the magazine was fixed, but it should not be used as an excuse to limit diversity or free expression as those are fundamental values of American Apparel.”
