Bubba the Love Sponge Takes On the Gay Agenda
January 31, 2009 by James Hipps
As I was driving towards my office this morning, I heard a popular radio personality, Bubba the Love Sponge, use the word “fag” while advertising an event. Being an activist for equality, I recognize the dangers and harm that are caused by the use of this word, as it perpetuates hate and bigotry. The use of such words, especially by someone who is listened to nationwide, also sends a message to others that it is OK to use the word. I find the word to be a derogatory term, whether or not the intent was or not, especially since so many have been beaten and killed while being called this word.
I decided not to let this one slide, so I called to lodge a complaint with the program manager, and found myself live on the show. Listen to what he had to say to my objection by clicking the play button below.

What’s your opinion?
He even has a poll on his website asking if the word “fag” is offensive. Check it out by clicking here.

Context, context, context….Among ourselves (LGBTQ)when the F word is used as self reference, usually in a sarcastic, self defacing way it can be nuetral, or even intimate. It is somewhat like the way the N word is used in Rap music and how some non – white people of color use the N word with and amongst themselves.
I see it as a similar because non LGBTQ people have been using it for hundreds of years to oppress and harrass LGBTQ people, to beat, kill and maime us. My understanding of the reason people started to reference us as the F word was after they started burning us as bundles of sticks along with the witches and heretics they burned during the crusades. (Myth?)
I found the fact that someone on this “Bubba” show started calling you a “Pussy” because you were offended and called in to the show and then started to refer to you as a female even more disturbing. IT IS NOT OK! If they are so gay friendly why would they continue to use language that we say hurts us?
Used by someone outside the (LGBTQ) community the F word is NOT FUNNY! I have had enough of it! Instead of rallying around the next “Will & Grace” TV Homo Promo, what we need is a 24/7 channel that displays the photo’s and videos of those LGBTQ people that have been harrassed, attacked, beaten to death, emotionally tortured to the point of killing themselves for these people to “GET IT” and have some compassion for us, or do we need an armed revolution so they at least have a healthy fear of us!
I wanted to leave this comment at the “Bubba” website, but couldn’t find the place to vote or comment on the use of the F word from the link that is posted on the gay agenda website.
I think that what Brent said was incredibly important. Do you want to spend your time enacting change and fighting for gay rights, or do you want to be the Word Police?
If you choose not to listen to the show selectively, then you will realize with haste that a) it’s a comedy show, b) they make fun of everybody, especially themselves, c) that means they’ll make fun of YOU, too. You might also recognize – especially if you’ve listened in the past – that they were perhaps the only vocal non GaL show in all of Florida to fight down the law banning equal rights for homosexuals and they are strong opponents of those who would actively promote bigotry in our society.
Behaviors like that by Mr. Hipps do more to hurt the gay movement than help it. Fight intent, not words, battle injustice, not name-calling, and work not to merely silence the people who hate you, but work to CHANGE THEIR MINDS! Oh, and maybe you should actually target those who HATE you, not those who use a word that you don’t like!
Hey Josh,
There are plenty of people who listen to the Bubba show who hate gay people, and whether or not you, or anyone else wants to label what I did as “the word police” or “selective listening” doesn’t matter to me. What does matter to me is that the use of that word, implies there is something funny or wrong with being gay. It also sends a message out to many others that using that word as a representation to things that are “funny” “wrong” “different” or whatever is NOT right, especially when hate crimes against the LGBT community are up nationwide. So, go ahead and use that word in jest if it makes you feel better, but remember, while you do that, there is someone in the world getting their head bashed in while being called a fag.
It seems that in your world, words speak larger than actions.
It would seem in your world, you don’t understand the power of words of hate, intolerance and bigotry.
