Happy Birthday & Thank You Dr. Seuss
March 2, 2009 by James Hipps
Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2nd, 1904. Today would have been his 105th birthday.
Dr. Seuss is widely known children’s books, but he also was the editor-in-chief of the college newspaper at Dartmouth, and also drew more than 400 political cartoons that were published in a New York daily newspaper. It was during his tenure at Dartmouth that he started going by the name “Seuss.” Once he graduated, he began signing all of his work, “Dr. Seuss”. During World War II, he started drawing political cartoons, and even designed posters to support the war effort. He then joined the U.S. Army as the leader of their animation department.
We all have Dr. Seuss favorite, but mine, is one that tells the tale of how discrimination is ugly, petty and ignorant…but tell it in a kind, way…”The Sneetches”. Here’s a clip!
