No Gay Marriage Bill for New York

April 23, 2009 by James Hipps

No Gay Marriage Bill for New York

NY’s Governor Paterson has said,

“For too long we have allowed the perception that gay and lesbian New Yorkers have the same privileges as their own straight brothers and sisters or their mothers & fathers. That is not the case. Too many cannot even make medical decisions on the prospect of the care for their partners, nor can they visit them in the hospital.”

In an effort to put his money where his mouth is, NY’s Governor Paterson stated last week he would put forward a bill to legalize marriage for gay and lesbian couples in the state.

Now, the governor has reversed his stance. The senate majority has leader convinced him not to put up a bill which is viewed by many as destined to fail.  Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith said he would rather wait until passage of such bill is assured.
