Utah Mormons Ecstatic Over Prop 8 Ruling
May 27, 2009 by James Hipps
While the California Supreme court upheld denying equal rights in the state of California, not all is lost…and I’m not talking about the 18,000 same-sex marriages that will stand. According to many members of the LDS church, who dumped tens of millions of dollars into the campaign against marriage equality in a state they don’t even reside in, this is a time and a cause to celebrate.
In a press statement, the Mormon church gleefully announce the upholding of the discriminatory ballot measure stating:
“Today’s decision by the California Supreme Court is welcome. The bedrock institution of marriage between a man and a woman has profound implications for our society.”
Also, Bill Duncan, who is the director of the Lehi-based Marriage Law Foundation and supporter of Utah’s amendment, called California’s ruling “gratifying.”
“It protects not only the idea of marriage, but also the rule of law. People can use existing law to make public policy without judges overturning the people’s decision for no other reason than they disagreed with the people’s judgment.”
The ruling is especially heartening, Duncan said, after a string of states — Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine — recently joined Massachusetts in legalizing gay marriage.
Duncan adds:
“There’s been the argument out there that it’s kind of inevitable that marriage is going to be redefined. This makes it clear that, when voters have a chance to have their say on the question, they understand that marriage [between a man and a woman] is valuable and worth preserving.”
So the same church that discriminated against people of color (because being Black was a punishment from God) until 1978 when former President Jimmy Carter stepped in an threatened them with taxation if they didn’t stop preaching segregation, is again celebrating the legal discrimination and oppression of a minority group.
Even though the tens of millions of dollars spent by the Mormon church could have feed millions of hungry, housed millions of homeless, or educated thousands who will never afford a higher degree of education, they chose to spend their tax-free dollars on maintaining a discriminatory law that affects a relatively small percentage of American citizens…definitely a cause for celebration. I hope they sleep better tonight knowing that Gay and Lesbian citizens in the state of California are still second class.
Grow some balls President Obama…stop discrimination against tax-paying LGBT citizens now!
