Mennonite Group Pushes for LGBT Acceptance

Mennonites should be more accepting of gay and lesbian members, according to a campaign being waged by some members during the denomination’s national conference in Columbus this week.
Since November, about 1,400 Mennonites have signed an open letter calling on the church to reopen the conversation about the faith’s official stance on homosexuality. Supporters of the effort are presenting a resolution to a church committee today.
Under church policy, gays and lesbians who are sexually active cannot be members, and same-sex couples cannot be married. Churches that condone homosexuality face disciplinary methods such as suspension and expulsion by the 21 area conferences overseeing the nation’s Mennonite churches.
