Australia Calls to Improve GLBT Suicide Response

Coroners, emergency rooms and hospitals need to pay greater attention to the sexuality of suicide victims to help establish the true extent of GLBT suicide and to help aid in providing improved programs and resources in fighting it, says the country’s national suicide and harm prevention organisation.

Suicide Prevention Australia has issued a new position statement calling for improved responses to suicide among GLBT communities. The call comes as the organisation reveals that the suicide rate of GLBT people is significantly higher than that of heterosexuals.

The position statement, which collates a decade’s worth of research on suicide among queer people, reveals that same-sex attracted individuals have a suicide rate of up to fourteen times higher than heterosexuals.
