Maine’s Equality Campaign Donations Reported

October 14, 2009 by James Hipps

Supporters of same-sex marriage law in Maine announced yesterday they have collected $2.7 million for their campaign against a ballot proposal to repeal marriage equality, which is twice as much as those who oppose same-sex marriage are reporting as raised.

So far, the NO on 1/Protect Maine Equality, reportedly has spent $2.2 million of the money raised on its campaign in hopes of keeping marriage equality as law.

Stand for Marriage Maine, which is the anti-gay group that petitioned to get the repeal measure on the November ballot, has only reported collecting $1.1 million and report spending slightly over $941,000 on its campaign. The group in opposition to equality has also stated they have debts totaling more than $419,000. No on 1 reported no debts.

The figures were disclosed in campaign finance reports that were due to the state Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices on Tuesday night.

Maine’s Governor John Baldacci signed the same-sex marriage bill into law in May, but the law has yet to go into effect, pending the outcome of the November 3 election.

I should buy the book Tortured for Christ. But the title should be changed to Tortured By Christ. Well, his followers anyway. And they continue to torture gay people with these insane referendums to control gay people’s lives.

Stand for Marriage Maine would have better spent their 1.1 million on free marriage counseling for heterosexual couples.

Seems to me their approach to gay marriage is like trying to cure poverty by banning money.
