Nixon: Time “To Put His Money Where His Mouth Is”
October 12, 2009 by James Hipps
Of the estimated tens of thousands who joined the National Equality March in Washington were some better know figures including “Sex & The City’s” Cynthia Nixon.
When asked her view on President Obama and how he’s handling LGBT equality, Nixon stated:
“He says all of the right things, but now it’s time for him to put his money where his mouth is.”
Another well known actor and equality advocate Gavin Creel stated:
“Our community has gotten a little too tunnel-vision: (criticizing Obama by saying ‘Okay, you said you were going to do it, why haven’t you done it?’) I believe in him.”
I follow both. I understand that orating intent for action is a positive step, but after time, if no action is taken, they only become words of lip service, yet I do feel many (LGBT’s) have developed tunnel vision, forgetting the history of our struggle and failing to realize that change of any kind, especially of this magnitude, can and will not happen overnight.
I realize Americans are not patient people as a general rule, but do believe our president to be a true ally to the LGBT community, and therefore I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt and patients…and I’m also willing to put my money where my mouth is and work in my community to build equality. I’m willing to talk to those who oppose us. I’m willing to advocate for our rights at the grass-roots level. The march in Washington may have served as a great way to “rally the troops” and build momentum, but the real work needs to be done outside of Washington, in our local communities, and by us…members of the LGBT community.
