AMA to Assist in Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
November 10, 2009 by James Hipps
The nation’s largest physician group, the American Medical Association (AMA) has agreed to assist in efforts to repeal the military’s don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy.
At its interim policy meeting held Today in Houston, the Chicago-based AMA also declared by vote that bans on same-sex marriage contribute to health disparities for LGBT couples and their children.
The AMA says Don’t Ask Don’t Tell creates ethical dilemmas, not only for lesbian and gay service members, but the doctors who treat them. They also agree that bans on same-sex marriage leave lesbian and gay couples open to exclusion from health care benefits, including health insurance and family and medical leave rights.
