Evangelicals & Roman Catholics Team Up Against Marriage Equality
November 21, 2009 by James Hipps
According to various reports, over 150 “Christian” leaders, mostly conservative evangelicals and traditionalist Roman Catholics, joined together and issued a joint declaration Friday reiterating their opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion, but in the same breath, pledged to fight to protect religious freedoms. In other words, they want to make sure no one gets to mess with their ‘rights’ but want to reserve the right to tell people that don’t subscribe to their religious ideology how they can and can not live.
The document, called “The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience,” is 4700 words of rhetoric.
I find their attempt to call themselves out in the document hilarious! The group acknowledges that “Christians and our institutions have too often scandalously failed to uphold the institution of marriage,” but still, wants to make it clear they rejects marriage equality for LGBT citizens. The declaration also spews the typical nonsense rants of how gay marriage will lead to “polyamorous partnerships, polygamous households, even adult brothers, sisters, or brothers and sisters living in incestuous relationships.”
I suppose they overlooked data from the nations world-wide that have ended marriage discrimination, and yet are to have polygamous or incestuous marriages.
The group does tip their hat ever so slightly to President Barack Obama as he has mentioned a desire to reduce the need for abortion calling his efforts “a commendable goal,” but in the same breath punch him in the face stating his health care proposals will lead to an increase in the number of elective abortions, stating:
“The present administration is led and staffed by those who want to make abortions legal at any stage of fetal development, and who want to provide abortions at taxpayer expense.”
At taxpayer expense? Are they for real? These are tax-exempt organizations that use millions of tax-exempt dollars to maintain discrimination against tax-paying LGBT citizens! Oh the irony and hypocrisy…and yet the Catholic church wonders why the number of parishioners in their membership is shrinking and why they have had to consolidate by closing churches and combining them with others nation wide.
The declaration also states that gay marriage and health care reform is a serious threat to health care workers’ conscience clauses and will directly impinge on religious freedoms, again, the freedom to deny all Americans are equal perhaps? That hasn’t happened yet and God forbid that EVER happen!
No shocker here, but the signatures on the document included some the nations more well known anti-gay “Christian” leaders including 15 Roman Catholic bishops, and one of the greatest anti-gay bigots of all times, James Dobson, founder of the anti-anything that’s not white, straight, and not too stupid to know better, Focus on the Family, yet another wonderful tax-exempt organization fighting for their right to discriminate against tax paying citizens!
