I've said it before, and I'll reiterate. If rights were left up to a popular vote, then people of color would still be drinking from separate water fountains in some Southern states.

"Well, there go our Honeymoon plans."

I'm so sorry, this is a shameful day in US history. That a right, a basic human right that really is already in our constitution if people would just READ it, could be stripped away just like that.

The truly sad thing here is that the gain in rights which ended up being reversed by this ill-advised "proposition" was one that was originally brought about by an elected body, rather than one imposed by a judicial decision.

It is high time that the United States revises its constitution to disallow "removal" of rights gained through either judicial or legislative decision. When rights are granted, it is for a reason. Granting rights is a step forward. NOTHING should be permitted from ever REMOVING rights from any segment of the population.

Particularly not through a "popular vote". It is the grossest of abuses of "democracy".

I think we'll spend our hard-earned dollars in a more civilized country.

This is very sad, I honestly thought things would go well in Maine, I guess I let myself believe that people were opening their eyes to how stupid it was to deny gay marriage.

I live near Maine, don't know what products come out of there but I don't think we really buy anything that comes from Maine anyway.

@ Ken,

You're right in a sense that time is on our side. I have been patiently awaiting change since Obama became president, mostly because I know change takes time.

However, when it comes to organizations, like NOM, who are tax-exempt, and spend millions of those tax exempt dollars fighting against equality for tax paying citizens, and by spreading lies to incubate fears and ignorance, I begin to loose my patience.

The real enemy here is the Christian right....which is neither Christian or right. The lies and propaganda have to be stopped!

This is terribly sad. Having gone to college in Maine in the late 1970's, I really thought that Mainers' sense of fairness and skepticism of authority -- like churches -- would win the day. It didn't. But we have to remember that almost 50% of the state supported same-sex marriage -- unheard of only a few years ago. And with young people supporting us in greater and greater numbers, time is on our side.

This is terrible news. I hope that Maine gays publish the names of opponents and companies who worked against us so I can boycott their products.
I will boycott all travel to Maine for sure but if I know what products to boycott that would help.

I am sick of this tyranny of the maority being allowed toe prevail. When the majority of Southern States opposed civil rights for black americans they were not permitted to vote to keep their racial bigotry and discrimination.

I hope Maine gays work tirelessly in the economic arena to punish those who supported hate and bigotry. For now I'll will not by any product made in Maine unless I know it was made by a gay friendly company.
