Evan Low offers a rare mix in local politics. At 26, he became one of the youngest Asian Americans to be elected mayor, and he’s openly gay in a town that isn’t really a stronghold for LBGT political activity.

Low was elected mayor of Campbell, California, in a vote by the city council on Tuesday. Low was born in nearby San Jose, but moved to Campbell, situated between San Francisco and San Jose in the area known as Silicon Valley, to be closer to family. Low’s father, an optometrist, sits on the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

Low has a busy schedule as he finishes out master’s degree in public administration at San Jose State University. The young mayor posed for pictures with attendees who cheered him on at the packed ceremony, but he took a serious tone when talking about his new duties.

“In the face of these tough economic times, we know that we must adjust,” Low said. “But fiscal responsibility does not mean that we stop investing in our city. It just means that we must keep a very watchful eye.”
