CBS Sells Ad Time to Anti-Gay Group

Contributed by Lyndon Evans:

According to an article in Friday’s edition of the Denver Post and as written by Electa Draper, the anti-gay group, Focus On The Family, has purchased two 30 second spots, one which will run prior to the Super Bowl coverage on CBS and the other during the game which will be held on February 7.

The ad’s production cost and actual buy time cost were not revealed by Focus On The Family but this year’s 30 second spots run between 2.5 and 2.8 million dollars. This year’s ad rates are down from last year’s spot rate of 3 million dollars when NBC covered the Super Bowl.

It’s reported by the Denver Post that 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and star quarterback for the University of Florida, Tim Tebow, will appear in the ad with his mother.

As Focus On The Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger puts it, the Tebows will be sharing “one of their many personal family-affirming stories”. The Focus On The Family ministry is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Needless to say I’m extremely disappointed with my former employer, CBS Broadcasting, in it’s decision to sell ad time to a gay hate group.

I know times are tough in broadcasting for ad revenue, both radio and TV (ergo my downsizing in 2006), but to sell ad time to a hate group which professes to spread the gospel and “family values” is unconscionable.

I suppose if we were back in the 30’s and 40’s CBS would be selling ad time to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Commercials during the Superbowl are supposed to be funny and worth watching, last year my husband and I loved the Budweiser commercials. I’m not looking forward to hearing from Focus on the Hate during a time that we usually enjoy ourselves.

I will not be watching the SuperBowl or its ads. CBS can forget my attendance. If there is any petition or letter campaign, please post it here so I can participate.

[...] This news first came to my attention in an article written by Lyndon Evans for an online newspaper, The Gay Agenda, (website: http://www.GayAdenda.com) late last week. Evans, a former CBS employee, expresses his dismay at the actions of his former employer by saying “to sell ad time to a hate group which professes to spread the gospel and “family values” is unconscionable.” He further goes on to suppose that “if we were back in the 30’s and 40’s CBS would be selling ad time to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis”  (Lyndon Evans Gay Agenda article can be found HERE )  [...]

Even people that don’t support gay rights won’t want to see Focus on the Hate, I’m really disgusted about this. A hate group has nothing to do with the Superbowl and CBS should already know this, shame on all of them!

You sure have a wide definition of hate. Anyone who doesn’t agree with your viewpoint? Why are you so against having open debate about homosexuality?

@ gsmaverick – I can’t speak for the author of this post, but personally I don’t see open debates about “homosexuality” as any more of an option than debating race. Either you’re gay or straight. What’s to debate? Either you’re a homophobic bigot who thinks your personal religious beliefs should trump the equality of LGBT persons or you’re not. Take “religion” out of the picture, there is no debate. Show me actual proof of why religion exist then maybe we can debate. People of certain faiths don’t like LGBT people because they are “different” just as some white people don’t like people of color. Just as white people used to do prior and during the Civil Right Movement, Anti-gay “Christians” use their ultimate authority (God) to try to justify their prejudice and discrimination, which again is based on their lack of knowledge. So in essence, I agree with the author, people who don’t accept LGBT’s as equally as human as “straight” people, are haters. Not a lot of gray area there.

If someone doesn’t agree with me than they don’t agree with me, I couldn’t care less. Focus on the Family is a hate group because they attack homosexuals. Don’t ever put words in my mouth, we are all allowed to have our viewpoints, it’s when those viewpoints violate civil rights and force themselves on me that I have a problem. People (like Focus on the Hate) use religion to justify their hatred, I think this is very stupid but that is their viewpoint; it’s when they start turning thier religion into law and forcing it on me that I have a problem, I do NOT follow a religion and do NOT want it forced on me.

I don’t see how we need an open debate about homosexuality, there’s nothing to debate- there are gay people in this world DEAL WITH IT, or run and hide because obviously they are trying to take over the world.

    Get a life.
