July 29, 2010 by Jason Shaw
The NY Daily News website reports that a contestant from 2007 American Idol series has filed a lawsuit against the show claiming he suffered anti-gay discrimination, harassment and slurs when invited back for the 2010 finale!
Ian Benardo, whose interpretation of Laura Brannigan’s Gloria was rejected by all the judges first the round, claims he was subjected to inappropriate questions about his sexuality after being invited back onto the show.
He’s filed his complaint with the New York State Human Rights Division, where he alleges he was “permeated with discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, insults and hostile and offensive comments,”
The 30 year old, whose audition failure became a bit of a YouTube hit for a while was invited back for this year’s LA finale at Nokia Theatre , to be part of a tribute act. He claims he was asked “Why don’t you act more faggy?” before being encouraged by producers to rush the stage and grab a microphone from a speaker.
He is now suing American Idol for $300 million! “I became a paid employee when they asked me back. Only after that did I start hearing, ‘Why don’t you act more faggy? They encouraged me to be totally outlandish, they wanted me to dress in drag and kept using anti-gay slurs to tell me how to behave.” He told the paper!
