Taking the Religious Right to Task…Court Works Too!

July 31, 2010 by James Hipps

I’ve been saying for many years that one way to gain equality is to stop playing defense and put the opposition on defense.

That’s exactly what one Michigan politician is doing. Holding a right wing nut responsible for their false rhetoric…Why, because freedom of speech doesn’t mean you get to make up blatant lies and publish them about people.

According to reports:

With only days remaining before Michigan’s primary election, former State Rep. Leon Drolet has filed a 10-page anti-defamation suit against one of his challengers, current state Rep. Kim Meltzer, who accused him in a campaign flier of trying to legalize gay sex in public parks and restrooms.

“I’m stunned and saddened that Kim Meltzer would lower herself to the level of printing complete lies about me,” Drolet told the Detroit Free Press. “I am truly embarrassed for Kim. She owes the voters an apology.”

Meltzer’s accusation stems from a 2003 bill Drolet co-sponsored that sought to update a 1927 state law outlawing consenting sodomy by amending it to reference only “sodomy with an animal.” The legislation made no mention of public restrooms, and public sex of any type remains illegal.

This is exactly what it’s going to take to get them to backdown. I hope the lawsuit is successful. I know they’ll cry that we’re taking away their religious liberties and freedom of speech, but all we’re really doing is saying, you can’t make up lies and get away with it!

This lawsuit should be successful, and it’s a very cowardly action taken when you make up lies to bash a political opponent.

Sex of anykind should never be public and to try to make up a story that someone else wants to make it legal is the action of a desperate opponent. This is typical of the GOP, I’m not surprised but I am disgusted.

    @ Jossi,

    You’re right. It’s typical GOP!
