Archbishop Williams Accused of Betrayal

The Archbishop of Canterbury has been accused of betrayal and holding an office “remnant of British colonialism” by one of the Anglican Communion’s leading conservative clerics.

The Most Rev Henry Orombi, Archbishop of Uganda, said Rowan Williams had let down churches that stick closely to the Bible by inviting Anglican leaders who elected an openly gay bishop to the Lambeth conference.

Writing in the Times newspaper, Archbishop Orombi - one of more than 200 bishops boycotting the conference - said future leaders of the worldwide Anglican church should not be appointed by a secular government.

He said: “Even the Pope is elected by his peers. But what the Anglicans have is a man appointed by a secular government.

“Over the past five years we have come to see this as a remnant of British colonialism, and it is not serving us well.”

Anglican Church ‘Wounded’ By Gay Boycott

“Bishops attending the Lambeth Conference have heard how the row over gay clergy has left the Anglican church a “wounded community”.

About 250 bishops - a quarter of those invited - have boycotted the event, following the consecration of the gay bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson.”
