Next Anglican Bishop may be a Gay Man

September 2, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

It has been reported by sources close to the selection process the next Anglican Bishop of Bangor in Wales just may be a gay man.

Dr. Jeffrey John is being considered for the post and this the more conservative Anglicans outraged.

Previously, Dr. John was forced to step down as Bishop of Reading in 2003 after a group of more conservative Anglicans posed objection that he was in a gay relationship with the Reverend Grant Holmes. He is currently serving as the Dean of St. Albans.

The guidelines, Under House of Bishops, states clerics are allowed to enter into civil partnerships as long as they are not engaging in sexual activities.

Tatchell Leads Protest at Anglican Conference

Gay rights campaigners gathered earlier at the Lambeth Conference as Anglican bishops from around the globe discussed the issue of homosexuality.

Members of the Lesbians and Gay Christian movement, led by human rights activist Peter Tatchell, waved posters in front of a 40-foot banner with the words “Stop crucifying queers” written on it. It would appear however, the protest went largely unnoticed by the 670 Anglican bishops attending the conference.

The group stood gathered at the University of Kent in Canterbury where a large number of African bishops spent the afternoon in discussions. Unfortunately, the bishops exited at a different site so they did not witness the protest.
