Why I’m Voting for Obama in 2008

October 15, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Telling the LGBT community why I’m voting for Obama is like preaching to the choir.

This full editorial essay appears in our Commentary Department. Why? It contains political, economic and historical analysis of the Republican Party. It contains strong opinion on why the best candidate the Republicans have to offer is not nearly good enough, by any measure. It also contains comment and anecdotes showing why no economic model or reform can truly succeed unless it’s based on a strong platform of equal access and equal civil rights for all Americans.

Many of us have been raised conservative and tried to win inclusion in an exclusionary Republican process that promises freedom at the price of sacrifice. No matter what you think you know about the parties, this is not the year to vote for a stale rehash of eight years of Republican administration. It’s too late for that.

Gay Vote Expected to Increase in Novemeber

September 23, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Amongst the minority groups, Gay and Lesbian voters have some of the highest voter turnout rates, even though they typically aren’t the targeted in elections.

Experts say, this demographic has increasingly become more important in regards to the electoral landscape, as people who identify as GLBT have significantly higher rates of voter participation, than those in other minority groups.

According to Ellen Riggle of the University of Kentucky, “The number of individuals who identify as GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender) has increased. More people are identifying at earlier ages, more people are living their lives openly.”

What exactly does this mean? Specific statistics are yet to be seen, but those running for office should know, we do have a voice, and we will make it count.

Are you registered to vote? If not, you still have time to do so by clicking here.

The LGBT Community is Uniting For Obama

From a post on GayCityNews.com.

During a September 7 City Hall press conference in support of Barack Obama, leading New York LGBT Democrats, many of whom had supported Senator Hillary Clinton during the spring primary season, sounded a strong message of unity, while a key operative for the Illinois senator made clear the campaign would push back on any effort to muddy the distinction between him and John McCain on critical gay issues.

“We’re at a fork in the road and we have to take it,” out lesbian City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said, in a light-hearted reference to New York’s grand master of malapropism, Yankee great Yogi Berra.
