Takei, who played Mr Sulu on the TV series, and his long-term partner, Brad Altman, were the first to receive a marriage license in West Hollywood after the court ruling in may that a ban on gay-marriage was unconstitutional.
Takei stated, “There are going to be heartbreaks, setbacks and sacrifices to be made,” he said, “but we will soldier on.”
Update: San Mateo County Officials Oppose Prop 8
September 17, 2008 by James Hipps · 3 Comments
As reported on September 15;
San Mateo California County officials are set to officially oppose Proposition 8, a California ballot measure that would take away the legal right of Gay and Lesbian citizens to marry by defining marriage as the union between only a man and a woman.
The Board of Supervisors will be voting on a resolution opposing Proposition 8 at it’s Tuesday meeting. Unless an unanticipated opposition arises, the decision the resolution is expected to pass. The resolution does not carry any legal weight, but the board’s stances will send a clear message to the county of where its elected leaders stand.
County Manager, John Maltbie stated, San Mateo county has “long supported the rights of same-sex couples by providing domestic partner benefits to its employees.” The board also feels that only recognizing civil partnerships and civil unions would be a poor substitute for granting couples the “dignity and respect that our society places on the institution of marriage.”
It has also been noted that if Proposition 8 were to pass, the state and local governments could lose revenue estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
UPDATE: Now according to a post on theburlingamedailynews.com;
Mark Church and the four other county supervisors voted unanimously in favor of a resolution opposing Proposition 8, the November ballot measure that would change the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
In other gay marriage news, George Takei, of Startrek fame and his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman, were wed Sunday night in Los Angeles.
