‘Bell’s Bigots’ Loudly Proclaim Their Hateful Wingnuttery

Last spring a southern Idaho right-wing talk-show host named Zeb Bell made some minor headlines by featuring a conversation on his daytime show in Twin Falls by referring to the “negroid black Barack Obama” and calling Obama’s mother “trailer trash” with a fixation on black men. Bell, you may recall, ultimately refused to apologize, claiming the remarks all came from his guest, a far-right nativist well noted for his racial slurs named Frosty Woolridge.

More recently, Bell has been plunging even farther off the deep end, attacking gays and lesbians as the centerpiece of his defense of California’s Prop 8, even going so far as to argue that “God’s laws” trump the Constitution.

14 Year Old Lesbian Attacked By Classmates

Police in Wayland, Mich., are investigating an attack by two 14-year-old girls on a third girl in Wayland Union High School. The victim was identified as a supporter of gay rights. The June 10 attack was purposely recorded on a cell phone video by another female, police say.

Wayland is located south of Grand Rapids and according to the city’s Web site has a population of 3,939 people.

Police told Grand Rapids-based WOOD-TV 8, the NBC affiliate, the two girls attacked the victim because she was a “gay rights advocate.”

Chief Dan Miller of the Wayland Police told the Kalamazoo Gazette the 14-year-old victim identified herself as a lesbian.

“I guess some say she’s pretty outspoken, and the other two girls didn’t like that,” he said in the Gazette. “We were told by the two suspects it was over the sex-orientation issue that they don’t believe in.

It was around the same time that I was researching the murders of Simmie Williams and Lawrence King, both of whom were harassed in school. I guess it interested me because of that, and because I was harassed in school. But I was fortunate never to experience something like this.

Hate Crimes Increase Again in Michigan

The FBI has released a report showing Michigan had a 4% increase in hate crimes targeted at victims because of their sexual orientation in 2007.

The state had 627 reported incidents, according to the report. Of those, 73 were targeted at victims because of their perceived sexual orientation.

Triangle Foundation reported an even higher number of incidents targeted at gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender (GLBT) victims in the state at 298.

According to Melissa Pope, the director of victim services for the Detroit-based gay-rights organization Triangle Foundation, hate crimes against the GLBT community are almost a daily occurrence.

“The primary reason our numbers are almost always higher is because people have a fear of being mistreated if they go to the police. For many of our clients, they want their identity sealed, but they want someone to know these crimes are going on.”

Victim of Gay Hate Crime in Brooklyn Dies

Jose Osvaldo Sucuzhanay, the Ecuadorian immigrant who was brutally beaten with an aluminum baseball bat in Brooklyn this past Saturday was taken off life support today.

According to a police, Sucuzhanay and his brother were seen staggering and holding on to each other as they left a Mexican bar early Saturday morning in Brooklyn. Four young men in a maroon SUV thought the brothers were gay. One of the men was heard shouting, “Check out those fagots over there.” The passengers jumped out of the SUV and accosted the two brothers. One of the attackers shouted, “Fuck you, Spanish people.”

Police are treating the death of Sucuzhanay as a hate crime and are offering a $22,000 reward for the capture of the four black teens in the maroon SUV.

I wonder if homophobe Mike Huckabee who recenlty stated on “The View” that gays haven’t suffered knows this guy got his “skull cracked open” because of his perceived sexuality?

Judy Shepard is the mother of Matthew Shepard.  Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered in Laramie Wyoming over 10 years ago because he was gay.
