Skins & Shirts Debut Tonight on LOGO

September 15, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Shirts & Skins, the highly anticipated reality series about a gay basketball team pursuing their dream of winning the National Gay Basketball Championship in Chicago, is coming to Logo this fall.

The show highlights six basketball players on the gay all-star team, the San Francisco Rockdogs.  Mike, Rory, DeMarco, Chris, Pete and Jamel are gay in the spotlight of the sports team legend who has won more gold medals than any other team. However, after a 2006 win at the Gay Games, the team lost it’s momentum.

Producers of the show catch up to the Rockdogs only one month before the National Gay Basketball Championship in Chicago. The team has some serious issues to overcome including a very small budget, some big personality differences and an overall poor team effort.

Despite their shortcomings, and fair share of team drama, Papa Joe, the teams manager claims, “When we say family, we mean family.”  The team not only shares a training house, but they eat together, train together, and, of course, celebrate together.

Former Basketball Pro, John Amaechi, makes a guest appearance that is especially touching. Amaechi’s role as therapist brings about a greater understanding of the team’s dynamics as he offers keen insight into these matters.

Shirts & Skins is reality series that will prove itself both entertainment and inspiration for gay and straight athletes and fans alike.

Watch the season premier Monday, September 15th at 10:00 p.m. on LOGO.  The first after premier show will be aired Saturday, September 20th at 11:30 a.m. and again at 10:30 p.m.

In The Gay Life with Katherine Linton

August 14, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Katherine Linton is best known to gay folk around the country from her time as the host of the long-running PBS series “In The Life.” Since then, she founded her own media company and has produced a series of documentaries focusing on gay life.

Originally from Westport, Connecticut, but now recently single and living in Brooklyn with her cat Popeye, Linton, 41, studied theatre at New York University and then went to Ringling Bros. Clown College. Afterwards, she joined the Big Apple Clown Care Unit and worked in municipal New York hospitals entertaining sick children.

After that came her time with “In the Life,” initially as host, but then with producing duties as well. Linton was asked by LOGO to create their first documentary, “The Evolution will be Televised,” but perhaps her most controversial and high impact project has been the series “Lesbian Sex and Sexuality,” also for Logo. Gay City News spoke to Linton as she prepared for the “series two” launch in September.

Lions and Tigers and Bears - Oh My!

August 4, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Director Dan Hunt’s documentary on the gay bear community had its premiere this past Saturday on cable channel Logo.

Bear Run exposes the fabled urban polar bear, cub, otter, and wolf. All playful nicknames given to describe various body types found in the bear community.

“A bear run is a gathering of bears,” Hunt tells Joe Solmonese and Mary Breslauer on XM Radio’s The Agenda.

And by following three bears as they attend various bear runs, Bear Run gives the viewer an intriguing look into the community.

Mikhael, a former trucker, is a transgendered bear who is married to a woman. We get to know him and his wife, Sylvia, in the movie.

In Reality All We Need to Say is - Gimme Sugar

August 1, 2008 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Gimme Sugar is like The Hills with cast members trying to make their way through a staged world called Life. But the difference between the two, other than social class (Hills is trust fund and Sugar is white-collar working), is the generally sincere message that friendship is key for the girls of Sugar. The superficial difference is these girls are lesbians.

Gimme Sugar is aired on LOGO, the new lesbian and gay channel run by MTV Networks. MTV catapulted the genre “reality television” before the term was even coined with its wildly popular The Real World.
