Trevis Prince: The Singing Prince of Tides

January 16, 2010 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Who is Trevis Prince?  Well if you don’t know, you’re going to want to know.  He’s an amazingly talented musician and singer who is climbing his way up the entertainment ladder.  According to Prince, “I’m not going to stop until I’m an international star.”, and after spending some time with him, I don’t believe he can be stopped!

A relative newcomer to the music industry, the 30 year-old Trevis has already earned his place on stage in New York City as he’s set to appear on February 17th at the legendary Apollo Theater. But even as Trevis has only been seriously pursuing his music career since 2003, he’s no stranger to performing as that’s something he’s been doing his entire life.  With an ultra-smooth voice, character and looks to match, I feel certain this guys going “straight” to the top.

You may ask, why the quotation marks around the word straight?  Well, because although we don’t feature a great many straight artist on gayagenda.com, Trevis is one we feel more than fortunate than to have had the opportunity to sit down and speak with.

When you meet Trevis, it’s his eyes, his smile, the way he carries himself that assures you he’s going to do great things.  He’s confident, not cocky.  Honest and forthright…And the one thing that makes people like Trevis so important to the LGBT community is that he is a true ally of.  Even with his gospel background the ‘new Prince’ doesn’t hold anything back when he speaks about diversity and the importance of equality for all people.

During our recent conversation, I asked Trevis who his major influences have been as artist and he answered with a wide range including Rod Stewart, Prince, Sam Cooke, Steve Perry from Journey and Michael Jackson.  According to Trevis, “The reason I like those artist there’s something about their music that really reveals their passion as you can sense it when they sing.  Passion is a huge element in any type of artistry.  I’m really the type of person that believes in the soul of music and that’s how I like all my music to be and those are people I really feel a connection to as far as being an artist.”

As an independent artist, Trevis has attempted mainstream avenues such as trying out for American Idol, but even though it didn’t work out, he was very humble referring to the tryout as “a very cool experience”.  But staying positive, which seems to common characteristic for Trevis, he admitted, “Idol” just wasn’t the right avenue.  According to Prince, “Just goes to show how everything works out the way it’s suppose to.  If I had been on Idol, I wouldn’t be appearing at the Apollo.”

Something that make Trevis unique is that he composes, writes the lyrics for, and produces all his music.  He’s really “hands on” from beginning to end.  A true independent artist who wants to stay that way.  Although he admits he would take a contract that may include letting others compose his music, his ultimate goal is to stay true to his vision about providing quality and passionate music that comes from his heart.

When it comes to his support for the LGBT community, even though he’s happily married (to a beautiful woman – sorry guys) he feels as passionate about equality as he does about his music.  When asked his thoughts on LGBT rights, Trevis was quick to respond, “I believe in loving everybody regardless of where they come from or who they love, because that’s how I would like to be treated by everybody else.” And when it comes to working towards LGBT rights, Trevis offered, “Sometimes you just have to keep pushing through until the flood gates open up.  Eventually people will look back and see how wrong they were to discriminate,” which is the same philosophy he uses in his own career.  Trevis also added, “I’m an advocate of being loved and I think everyone deserves to be.  If you have judgments about others, you should really keep them to yourself because that’s your personal beliefs that shouldn’t decide rights for others.”

Prince’s message to the world: “Love conquers all!”

So make sure you follow Trevis on his way to the top.  I have a feeling it won’t be long before Trevis Prince is a name that we all know and admire!

NYC Cops Keep Arresting Gay Men For Cruising Which Isn’t Illegal!

October 23, 2009 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

The rationale the NYPD has been using to arrest gay men cruising in adult book shops? It’s unconstitutional. So how come the police continue to intimidate these men, and courts continue to hear cases and issue punishments for a crime that is, in fact, not a crime at all?

It’s a great question, and Slate’s Daniel Redman tries answering it. “In 1983,” he reminds us, “New York’s high court struck down as unconstitutional a 1960s-era provision that made it illegal to cruise—that is, to hit on someone in a public place. And yet in the 26 years since, on thousands of occasions, the New York Police Department has continued to enforce the defunct law, historically used to target gay people.”
