Right Wing Hypocrisy, Wide Spread and Spreading Further

November 8, 2009 by James Hipps · 2 Comments

As most of us outside of the “Right Wing” know, there is a great deal of hypocrisy within. Yes…they tout grand lectures of smaller government, but is that what they really want? Perhaps, as long as that smaller government interferes on issues they don’t support.

An excellent example is pointed out on Irregular Times (click link for entire post):

When I speak of the “right wing”, I don’t just mean the Republican Party. I also mean to refer to a coalition of Democrats in Congress that has been fighting health care reform all year long. The coalition changes its tactics with the needs of the moment, but right now, that group is blocking health care reform legislation by demanding that all private insurance companies that participate in a new marketplace for government funded marketplace stop their current coverage for abortion. That provision is found within an amendment that Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak has demanded be considered, threatening to block health care reform legislation completely if it does not come up to a vote.

What the right wing, in the Republican Party and within the Democratic Party, is now arguing for is what it had been arguing against: Government interference in private health insurance plans. They’re demanding that the government ration health care. They’re arguing in favor of increased government power. They’re arguing in favor of more bureaucratic regulations, interfering with the free market delivery of health care.

So, first the right wing was against government interference, when it was associated with health care reform moving forward. Now, the right wing is in favor of government interference, when it is associated with the obstruction of health care reform. It seems that the right wing actually has no consistent opposition to government regulation. The consistent factor in the debate is the right wing’s opposition to health care reform, whatever that takes.

Now some of us, yes I’m included, have stated that it’s only a matter of time, in respect to the majority of right-wingers are older and eventually they’ll die off and progress will prevail.  However, let’s not become too comfortable with that thought.

There’s a great post on True/Slant (click link for entire post) that shows that the right wing is hard at work, doing exactly what they accuse the LGBT community of doing…recruiting our nation’s youth.  According to the post:

During the lead-up to the vote on R-71, a new group named the “Youth Revolution” emerged in Washington. Though the organization claims to represent “teens” and “20-somethings,” the group has ties to the Family Policy Institute of Washington, which funneled around $200,000 into a campaign PAC in an effort to defeat R-71. The connection between Youth Revolution and FPIW is Russell Johnson, the Executive Director of Youth Revolution, and Director of Governmental Affairs for James Dobson’s Focus on the Family/Family Research Council, an affiliate of FPIW.

So, to get to the point.  We can’t rest!  We (and I’m talking about the LGBT community) can’t become any more apathetic than we already are.  We can’t count on the future to bring us change we want, deserve and need.  We must work, and not only against the Obvious, but against those Democrats and youth who are falling into the ‘right wing trap’.

Voting on Equality Across America

November 3, 2009 by James Hipps · Leave a Comment

Yes, today is November 3rd, and I would be lying if I told you I slept well last night.  There is a lot at steak today across the nation as the voters head to the polls to cast their votes.

In the forefront, we have Maine.  Maine’s legislature passed a marriage equality law back in may, which would allow gay and lesbian couples to take the plunge, but with the help of the Catholic Church, NOM and Stand for Marriage Maine, the law went is going up for public approval via a popular vote.

In the state of Michigan, the city of Kalamazoo passed an ordinance that would outlaw discrimination against LGBT citizens in employment and housing, but the city’s Christians who believe hate is OK, as long as it’s against the LGBT community has forced a popular vote on the ruling.

Then, in Washington, there’s Referendum 71.  The state’s legislature passed a “everything but marriage” law aimed at providing many of the same benefits to same-sex couples that married heterosexual couples take for granted.  But, dispelling the myth that somehow the struggle is based upon the word “marriage”, this too has gone up for a vote, proving that the religious right’s beef with the LGBT community is really about being “gay” not about a sacred “religious” institution between a man and a woman.

In other states, there are races for the governor’s and legislative seats.  Sarah Palin has even reared her ugly head and shoved her nose into Virginia’s political scene with a robocall urging people to vote for those Republican candidates that support that anti-gay, anti-health care reform agenda.

So, today is not about who’s going to lead our nation in The White House, but it is about change, and hopefully the results will demonstrate that attitudes and acceptance is changing and growing.

It’s Not Just Maine on Tuesday

November 2, 2009 by Gay Agenda News Team · Leave a Comment

Much of the focus about same-sex marriage has been on Maine, and rightly so. Tuesday referendum is similar to California’s Proposition 8, which made same-sex marriage illegal. Yet there are two differences: (1)the Maine referendum the voters are weighing in on is a law passed by their representatives, not a decision by the courts; (2) the vote is about overturning a law passed by lawmakers, not about amending a constitution to prohibit gay marriage. The Maine vote is important, but there are other important decisions to be made on Tuesday.

It’s About Everything But Marriage

October 28, 2009 by James Hipps · 1 Comment

Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based anti-gay, tax-exempt “Christian” organization that was started by the infamously anti-gay James Dobson has been known to support legal considerations against equality for LGBT tax-paying American citizens.

They were huge financial backers and advocates of California’s Prop 8, which took away the right of LGBT couples to marry.  They’ve been instrumental in funding the hopeful repeal of Maine’s marriage equality law that was signed into law back in May.

It’s been said, the reason for involvement in such political activities is to protect the sanctity of marriage as it’s God’s wish that marriage remains only between a man and a woman.

However, not being too trusting of this country’s religious right, I’ve often doubted their sincerity over whether or not this is an issue simply over a word.  I’ve often thought the oppression of LGBT Americans was a cash cow for the “Christian” organizations who preach hate and fear of homosexuals…You know, “it’s about the children”, “it’s an abomination”, “it’s unnatural”, “it’s a sin”, “we have to fight against the gay agenda before it destroys America” kind of B.S.

Well, I was certainly right in one case.  According to a post on The Stranger, it’s not about marriage at all, in fact it’s about “Everything but Marriage”.

According to the post:

A glossy mailer arrived at The Stranger offices with this message printed on one side: “Protect the innocence of Washington’s kids. Vote to Reject Referendum 71.” It says it’s paid for by Focus on the Family Action, the Colorado-based conservative organization under the leadership of anti-gay James Dobson. The group has a educational nonprofit, but this is the PAC, which can donate to influence elections.

So, the state of Washington passes a law maintaining a “separate but equal” classification for LGBT citizens, not allowing them to become “married” and yet, those who say they’re only fighting to protect the sanctity of marriage to maintain it’s original purpose of joining one man and one woman are still spending tax-exempt dollars to fight the advancement of the LGBT minority in America.

Petition Signers Can’t Keep Names Secret

October 23, 2009 by Gay Agenda News Team · 1 Comment

From the LA Times:

Washington state voters who signed petitions to repeal a law enhancing rights for same-sex couples don’t enjoy a right to confidentiality, and their names can be disclosed to the public, a federal appeals court panel ruled Thursday.

In a case spurred in part by the angry backlash that greeted supporters of California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage last year, those seeking to repeal the Washington law failed in their bid to keep petition signers anonymous for fear they could face similar harassment.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Washington’s Public Records Act providing for disclosure of referendum petition signers is constitutional and serves important public interests. The panel also reversed a federal District Court order preventing disclosure of the names, but with little effect as the U.S. Supreme Court has stayed their release until all appeals have been exhausted.
