Zac Efron: The Next Paul Newman?

We all know and love Zac Efron, (unless you’re just insanely jealous of him) and in case you missed it, this hottie appeared on SNL this weekend.

It is really great to see this guy come out of his “HS Musical” shell and expand into other horizons. I really never paid too much attention to him until recently, and always setting aside skepticism for giving the benefit of the doubt, I’ve come to admire his skills and think this young man has a GREAT deal of potential. I see him as someone who has blossomed out of their “teen idol” stage, and now has real stage presence. I would even go so far as to say that he has the potential of becoming one of Hollywood’s greats.

Could this be the next Paul Newman? I think it could happen. What do you think?

Andy Samberg Stars on Out’s March Cover

The comedy star explains why his performance in the upcoming movie “I Love You, Man” challenges gay stereotyping

NEW YORK (February 18, 2009) – Andy Samberg built a career out of his lauded digital shorts for “Saturday Night Live.” In a new interview with Out magazine, Samberg explains why his gay character in his new movie, which also stars Paul Rudd, breaks with convention. “No-one is going to look at my character in I Love You, Man, and say, ‘It’s funny because you’re a straight guy playing a gay guy.’ It’s funny because the character is funny.’”

Responding to recent criticism that “SNL” has resorted to gay stereotypes, Samberg claims the source of humor is not homosexuality, but in the fraught relationship straight men have with it. “It’s bro-gay,” he says, “which I just love because dudes that are bros and super anti-gay are the ones who need to get it the worst. They’re the ones we have the most fun f***ing with.”

In his editor’s letter, Out Editor-in-Chief Aaron Hicklin explains that Samberg was chosen in part for his now famous digital short for “SNL” in which he lampooned Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, with a gay love song shortly after the president delivered a speech at Columbia University claiming there were no gays in Iran. Hicklin writes, “The execution of gays in Iran is a serious matter, of course, but as Charlie Chaplin demonstrated in ‘The Great Dictator,’ there are few more satisfying ways of disarming your enemy than by making him look ridiculous.”

Michael Phelps Caught On Camera

Michael Phelps, the 23 year-old, eight-time Olympic gold medalist, was busted on camera smoking pot at a house party at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  He has come out with a statement taking full responsibility.  He stated:

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

The first time Michael found himself apologizing publicly was when he was arrested for a drunk driving when he was 19.

Its too bad he has to watch his every move, but, that’s the price for being a celebrity.  Fame & fortune, and everything that goes with it.

N P Harris Host “SNL” But No Golden Globe

Neil Patrick Harris, one of our great “out” actors, was on Saturday Night Live last night, and just in case you missed it. Below is the opening segment.  Also, he was nominated for, but unfortunately didn’t win, a Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television” – (Whew, that’s a lot to say) for his role on CBS’s How I Met Your Mother!  Congrats on the nomination anyway!

Amy Pohler is a Real Baby Momma

Amy Poehler, one of the stars of Saturday Night Live, gave birth to a son hours before the “Baby Mama” star was to appear on last nights show.

On behalf of Poehler and her husband, Will Arnett, “I can confirm that Amy gave birth to Archie Arnett on Saturday,” read a statement from Poehler’s spokesman, Lewis Kay.

The baby was born early Saturday evening in New York, weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce.

Mother and child were “healthy and resting comfortably,” according to the statement.

Congrats Amy and Will!  We look forward to your return at making us laugh!
